Collective Bargaining Update and Trends Report

Improving Competitiveness Through More Effective Collective Bargaining

One of the most important and least popular jobs in American business is the task of negotiating a labor contract.  Successful business executives who take other challenges in stride often shun from sitting at the table with union leaders.  In many cases, this apprehension is justified because most contractors are amateurs at collective bargaining.  It is a job that comes up every two or three years and is normally forgotten until contract expiration looms.  The union team, however, is normally well supplied with seasoned bargaining table professionals, updated strategies and tricky proposed language changes.  All too often, this disparity results in a contract containing clauses which spell disaster for a company.  Too much is at stake in the bargaining process to leave anything to chance.
Bob Dunlevey will discuss various strategies and techniques for more effectively bargaining.  Also learn about the clauses to adopt and avoid.  From the preamble to the zipper clause (what’s that?), and from the apprenticeship provisions to the hiring hall clauses, there are dangers which lurk.
